In this chapter, I sketch a brief history of the more significant, longer running strands that have shaped another politics. In looking closely at these, we can see how past movements have catalyzed and carried constellations of ideas and practices that are still widely used by activists today. With this sketch in hand, I then turn to three particularly crucial strands that have converged in recent decades: anti-racist feminism, prison abolitionism, and anarchism. This convergence, in my view, has laid the basis for what is emerging as another politics in the United States and Canada, shaping its development through movements and mobilizations from the early 2000s into the present.
9 We have much to gain when we understand activists and organizers as experts about the struggles in which they are engaged. And we can gain even more when we join them on the frontlines. ”10 With this kind of “critical identification,” I write as both an activist and a researcher—an activist-researcher. This means that I deliberately include myself in what I discuss. ” Throughout this book, I take up shared aspirations, questions, and uncertainties as my own. At the same time, I recognize that my role gives me a lot of power: I set the framework for understanding another politics in this book and I make interpretive claims about the statements and activities of others.
Chapter 2 focuses on the politics bound up in the foundational “against” of this current. I describe the synthetic political approach at the heart of another politics, which flexibly draws on a wide set of theories and experiences. Borrowing a mode of analysis from Upping the Anti, I give an overview of the four “anti’s”—the main formulations of “against”—in the anti- Introduction / 17 authoritarian current: anti-authoritarianism, anti-capitalism, anti-oppression, and anti-imperialism. I argue that these “anti’s” have intertwined in important ways to lay the basis for the politics in this current.
